THANK YOU SO MUCH for today’s visit. I appreciate all the coordination you did to make this happen, we all got so much out of it. I will continue to seek out more film opportunities through CALFILM, as I think it brings in so much more to my classroom than what I am able to provide. Plus, in class surveys, students always tell me how much they like learning from film. And when I think back to my own classes, it’s these real-life events that impacted and stayed with me so much more than the content of whatever class.

This was an amazing and powerful film that our club members will never forget. We related so much to the film, and the fact that we were able to have a conversation with [its lead actress] was truly life-changing and we can’t thank you enough! Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to meet a role model and see a film directed by a person of color. I don’t know how else to thank you, but the fact that my club members left the film feeling so empowered and confident was my main hope and you allowed for that to happen.

The Q&A was fascinating and could have gone on and on! This was a highlight of our festival experience. It was so exciting to show our film in a theater to students. Better than a classroom! I think the best part was the way the students responded to the subjects in my film. They were laughing, really paying attention and asking such insightful questions. This is why we make films, so we can reach young people, and so we can have these kinds of interactions. A unique and memorable experience!

This film fit in perfectly with our Science Pathway Program. The most significant positive impact this year’s EYF [Environmental Youth Forum] had on our students is giving them the growth mindset that they can, as individuals, have an impact on their environment by starting early in their education and throughout their lives.

I just wanted you to know how much of a wonderful experience the Young Curators program was. After having gone through the process of watching films and selecting which ones are a part of the festival, this was an eye-opening experience. I realized that I am interested in curating programs in the future, whether that is for a film festival, museum, or film society.

The themes of friendship and curiosity overlapped with topics we were discussing in class. Also, the shorter lengths of the “shorts” allowed me to stretch the Film Festival experience over the course of a week without losing too much instructional time on any given day. Even before I could unmute them, I could see their smiling faces and applauding hands after each film. If only that were their response to my every lesson!
