VIVA – CAFILM Education

During the Mill Valley Film Festival (MVFF), the ¡Viva el cine! initiative has been showcasing Latin American, Latinx, and Spanish-language stories for several years, connecting audiences with a diversity of cultures, identities, and histories explored through the magic of cinema.

¡Viva el cine! x Education is the inaugural year-round expansion of this initiative, with a free three-day event presented by CAFILM Education from Thursday, March 2 to Saturday, March 4.

CAFILM Education has presented free education programs to Bay Area schools for more than 30 years, welcoming thousands of students to view new films and meet filmmakers from around the world.

We strive to celebrate Latinx stories year-round by continuing our bilingual programming, diversifying CAFILM Education’s programs for Spanish-speaking communities, and nurturing partnerships with local organizations. This year ‘s programming highlights films that are borderless in place, language and future.

¡Viva el cine! es una iniciativa de MVFF que celebra historias latinoamericanas, latines y en español, conectando a las audiencias con una diversidad de culturas, identidades e historias exploradas a través de la magia del cine.

¡Viva el cine! x Educación es la expansión inaugural de esta iniciativa con un evento de tres días empezando el Jueves 3 de Marzo al Sábado 4 de Marzo.

CAFILM Educación ofrece programas educativos gratuitos para escuelas del Área de la Bahía. Por más de treinta años, hemos recibido millones de estudiantes para ver nuevas películas y conocer cineastas de todas partes del mundo.

Buscamos celebrar historias latines durante todo el año, seguir fomentando programación bilingüe y diversificar nuestros programas educativos para la comunidad Latine. Este año nos enfocamos en narrativas sin fronteras en lugar, lenguaje y espacio.

Capturing individuals desperate to find the best form of expression, this program of two short documentaries demonstrates unique styles of poetry and self-expression. From the beautiful Mexican Sign Language poetry workshop for a group of deaf individuals in Regard Silence (2022) to the transformative journey of an immigrant becoming the Mexican National Poetry Slam Champion in The Ground I Stand On (2022), these two films show that expression has no boundaries.

Capturando a individuos buscando encontrar la forma correcta de expresión, este programa de dos cortometrajes representa dos tipos de poesía y expresión. Empezando con el hermoso taller de poesía en Lengua de Señas Mexicana de un grupo de personas sordas en Regard Silence (2022) y terminando con el viaje transformador de un inmigrante que se convierte en el Campeón Nacional de Slam de Poesía Mexicana en The Ground I Stand On (2022), estas dos películas muestran que en la expresión no hay límites.

In collaboration with Canyon Cinema—the Bay Area’s leading distributor of independent, non-commercial, and artist-made moving images—CAFILM Education presents a special glimpse of experimental cinema in Mexico. As part of their 2023 publication, Cinemazine #8 Cine-espacios, Canyon Cinema addresses Mexico’s multifaceted underground moving image culture and its distinctive makers.

En colaboración con Canyon Cinema— la distribuidora principal de imágenes en movimiento independientes y no comerciales en el Área de la Bahía— CAFILM Educación presenta un recorrido de cine experimental en México. Formando parte de su publicación del 2023, Cinemazine #8 Cine-espacios, Canyon Cinema aborda la cultura de imágenes en movimiento subterránea de México y sus creadores distintivos.
